2022 Gestal Swine Summit
This past October, the JYGA Technologies team received more than 100 researchers and nutritionists to attend the GESTAL Swine Summit in Quebec, Canada. On the agenda, 3-days filled with discussions, learning opportunities and networking. We had the honor to welcome renowned guest speakers and attendees from different countries with one common interest: nutrition in the swine industry.

DR. DAVID CADOGAN, AUSTRALIA
After working in pig production, and then as a senior nutritionist for Rivalea for 12 years, David joined Feedworks in 2003 as the Technical Services Manager developing nutritional solutions to enhance efficient growth and health of monogastrics. David completed a Masters and PhD at the University of New England, and has over 40 papers published in peer reviewed journals and over 60 papers in conference proceedings, in the areas of NSP fibre digestion, enzyme applications, amino acid nutrition and general digestive physiology.
DR. JENNIFER BROWN, CANADA
Jennifer completed her PhD at the University of Guelph in swine behaviour in 2009, and moved to Saskatchewan to work at the Prairie Swine Centre (PSC). As PSC’s Research Scientist in Ethology, she leads a research program focused on key issues related to pig behaviour and welfare, including management of sows in group housing, use of pain control at castration, transportation of nursery and finisher pigs, and on-farm euthanasia. Other research areas include implementation of novel technologies in the swine industry, evaluation of new welfare indicators, and meat quality.
In addition to research, Jennifer teaches at the University of Saskatchewan in the Dept. of Animal and Poultry Science and has participated on industry committees with the Canadian Pork Council, National Farm Animal Care Council, National Pork Board (USA) and World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). Jennifer shares her home with an assortment of livestock in rural Saskatchewan.
DAN BUSSIÈRES, CANADA
Dan Bussières, a swine nutritionist graduated in 1996 from Laval University in Quebec, and his partner, founded Groupe Cérès Inc. in 2004. This company, based in Lévis, specializes in all areas of swine production. Groupe Ceres service offer includes consulting services in swine production, production and distribution of breeding stock and sales of nutritional products. Groupe Ceres is also involved in swine production managing a net work that produce over 300 000 pigs annually.
Dan works on the development and monitoring of nutrition programs for swine producers all over Canada. Groupe Cérès Inc. and its affiliates influence the feeding of more than 5.5 million pigs annually, which include consulting for the nutrition and R&D for HyLife, one of the top 2 swine producers in Canada. He is also doing consulting in nutrition and production with Tianzow breeding a company in China that has 80 000 sows in production. Dan is working with many industry partners to conduct field research projects which aim at developing new feed programs in order to optimize the performances of pig, their profitability and to improve meat quality. He has done many presentations for producer meeting or at different conference/seminar in swine production. Today, Groupe Cérès Inc. and its other business partners employs more than 100 peoples and is committed to continue working with Canadian-produced pigs.
DR. TREVOR DEVRIES, CANADA
Dr. Trevor DeVries is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Animal Biosciences at the University of Guelph. Trevor received his B.Sc. in Agriculture from The University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2001. Immediately following he began graduate studies at UBC, where he received his Ph.D. in 2006. Following that, he spent one year as a post-doctoral fellow with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. In 2007, he was appointed as faculty with the University of Guelph in the Department of Animal Biosciences. In that position, Trevor leads a highly productive research program and has published over 190 peer-reviewed papers focused on dairy cattle nutrition, management, behavior, and welfare. He is also committed to extending that work to the field, as evidenced by over 290 invited research presentations. Trevor also contributes to teaching at the university, including instructing undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of dairy cattle management, behavior, and welfare, coaching the university Dairy Challenge team, as well as mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students. Trevor also works diligently in public service, serving on several university committees, as well as various local, national and international professional committees.
DR. CHANTAL FARMER, CANADA
Dr. Farmer is a research scientist in sow lactation biology working at the Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. She obtained her B.Sc. from McGill University (1980), her M.Sc. from the University of Saskatchewan (1982) and her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University (1986). Dr. Farmer was a pioneer in studying mammary development in gilts and sows and identifying the various factors affecting it. She has published 159 scientific manuscripts, 9 book chapters, and is the sole editor of two books that were also translated and published in Chinese. Dr. Farmer’s expertise is recognized internationally as evidenced by her being a guest-speaker in 13 European countries as well as China, Australia, Canada and the USA. She was Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Animal Science from 2006 to 2010. She was on the board of the Canadian Society of Animal Science for 12 years, serving as its president in 1998-99, she received 2 national awards and was made a fellow of this Society in 2017. Dr. Farmer also served two terms on the board of the American Society of Animal Science from 2014 to 2020, from which she received the 2022 President’s Award for International Achievements in Animal Science. Dr. Farmer is currently on the editorial board of the journals Translational Animal Science and Domestic Animal Endocrinology.
DR. HYATT FROBOSE, UNITED-STATES
Dr. Hyatt Frobose serves as the USA Commercial Director and Swine Nutritionist for JYGA Technologies. Hyatt specializes in assisting swine producers with group-housing solutions and nutritional programs to optimize performance and welfare of gestating and lactating sows in commercial environments. In 2015, Dr. Frobose completed his doctorate degree in swine nutrition and management at Kansas State University where he authored or co-authored 8 refereed journal articles and 22 abstracts. This research focused on nutrition and reproduction interactions in gestating & lactating sows and the effects of mycotoxins on pig growth. Hyatt is based out of Kansas, USA where his family own and operate a seedstock Gelbvieh cow/calf operation.
AMANDA UITERMARKT, UNITED-STATES – HOST
Amanda is a USA Technical Director for Gestal/JYGA Technologies. She graduated from the University of TN in 2011 with a Bachelor’s in Animal Science and then graduated from the Kansas State applied swine nutrition program with a Master’s in Swine Nutrition in 2013. Immediately after graduation, Amanda joined Carthage Innovative Swine Solutions, LLC for almost 5 years and assisted in research projects on commercial wean to finish and sow sites. In her current role, she assists producers and integrators from start to finish on new construction or retrofit projects and with the integration of precision feeding equipment.
EMMA BAXTER, UNITED KINGDOM
Emma Baxter is an Associate professor at SRUC in Edinburgh, UK, specialising in animal behaviour and welfare, with over 20 years of research experience particularly related to integrated pig science. Her main interests include; neonatal survival, developing alternative farrowing and lactation systems, implementing uptake of high welfare systems and practices and mitigating the health and welfare impacts of selection for production traits such as hyper-prolificacy. Emma works closely with industry with all sectors of the supply chain, providing consultancy and specialising in outreach to translate research into practice. She is currently coordinating development of a micro-learning website for stockworkers to instil good-to-better practice in welfare improvements on farm and she co-created and manage freefarrowing.org for those interested in alternative high welfare farrowing and lactation systems.
Emma is an active member of a number of national and international committees including the EU sub-group for pig welfare and the RSPCA’s Scientific and Technical Advisory Group for pig standards.
DR. LUIENE MOURA ROCHA, CANADA
Dr. Moura Rocha is an animal welfare researcher and consultant with a singular and solid experience in animal welfare assessment covering different stages of swine production, such as gestation, farrowing, nursery, growing and finishing phases, transportation, slaughter, and meat quality.
She has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in animal sciences from Brazil, a Ph.D. in animal sciences from Université Laval and two post doctorates in Canada. Her areas of expertise are animal production, stress physiology, validation of stress and animal welfare indicators, and meat quality. Besides peer-reviewed articles published in scientific journals and good practices handbook, she has 3 book chapters and more than 30 presentations at national and international conferences on animal welfare. She has also been trained/certificated by Clover Leaf, PAACO- Common Swine Industry Audit and Red meat plant, and Welfare Quality® – Pigs.
From 2016 to 2019 she held the position of research scientist in animal welfare and meat quality at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Since 2021, she occupies a position of project manager at the Centre de développement du porc du Québec inc. (CDPQ) working on the validation of animal welfare indicators.
DR. CARLOS PINEIRO, SPAIN
Carlos Piñeiro is a veterinarian, working for the swine research farm, near Segovia, Spain. For the last 18 years, he has been the director of PigCHAMP Pro Europa S.A. with specialization and current lines of research: Information Systems in animal production and health and Contract Research in commercial farms in animal production, food, health, management, animal welfare and environment. Expert in data management and analysis of productivity and pig health, management of more than 20 national and international applied research projects, 23 publications in indexed scientific journals, more than 100 papers in scientific conferences and 5 chapters in books specialized in production, animal health and environment.
